“Traditional” Yield concepts reflect the short term view of the customers (“I’m not interested in how many defects a product/service has but that it’s defect-free”):

  • First Time Yield – The ratio of defectives vs. units processed
  • Final Yield – The ratio of defectives (after rework) vs. units processed

Six Sigma Yield concepts focus on defects and defect opportunities:

  • Throughput Yield – the ratio of defects vs. defect opportunities regarding a single process step
  • Rolled Throughput Yield (RTY) – multiplication of Throughput Yields of multiple process steps
  • Normalized Yield – the root of the multiplied Throughput Yields (“average process yield”) of multiple process steps
